Building confidence by helping others
“I think a lot of my confidence came from helping people [in school] and from knowing I could make an impact. It wasn’t about grades or what I was learning in the classroom. It was really about what I was doing on the streets. When I went into the workforce, I carried that with me. It was a sense of confidence that I could do something to make an impact. I think that’s where my confidence started. Where it broke down for me was probably when I was getting hit by red tape. Since I’m used to being in charge and in the lead, those moments were not the easiest for me.
Changing subconscious thinking to not allow oneself to feel like an imposter
“So it’s interesting. If you think about the culmination of my identity, “imposter syndrome” is being a non-technologist in a technologist world. This has impacted me more than being a South Asian Woman in a White Man’s world.
Although, I do still struggle with this quite a bit honestly. I am connected to India but didn’t live there. When I go there I feel a desire to belong, but I do not. I feel like I have to work a little extra hard to be there given how different of a culture it is. I almost feel a little guilty about not being as connected. There is a common thread with these experiences and how they have impacted me. You kind of see that you create your own barriers. You have to realize that it is completely in your own head, but it exists.”
